Thinning hair is often thought of as only a male problem, but it plagues women as well. Thinning hair in women can be caused by a number of different conditions -- it could be the side effect of certain medications you are on, related to stress and hormonal fluctuations, or caused by a vitamin or mineral deficiency, particularly iron. If any of these is the cause of your problem, I suggest consulting a physician.

Other causes may be over processing the hair, such as with frequent chemical processes. If your hair is related to chemical processes and dry, check out our Dry hair section for some great tips. If you color, highlight, straighten or perm your hair and have noticed thinning, try giving your hair a rest for a few months and see whether it returns too normal. It can be hereditary also know as androgenetic alopecia.

Pulling your hair back too tightly every day can result in excessive hair loss. After you pull your hair back, be sure to loosen it around your scalp. Never sleep with hair bands in your hair. They can cause excessive damage and lose of hair while you toss and turn.

Another new finding is the build up of excess Sebum or also know as DHT, on the scalp. Have you ever noticed how shiny a bald head is? This is sebum built up on the scalp. Think of your head as a golf ball, with little divots all over. If you roll that ball in the dirt, it makes a smooth service. Well, if you fill the hair follicles with sebum, they become hard, making it difficult or impossible for the hair to "poke" through. Hair then goes into the hibernation stage for 6 months then the papilla dies. Thus causing hair loss. After If excess sebum is is the result of your hair loss, there is help! You need to remove the excess DHT and nourish your papilla.
How to hide thinning hair:

  • Cutting your thin hair in a shorter style.
  • A blunt  hair cut will make your hair appear thicker at the ends.
  • Avoid long hair
  • Scalp treatments can stimulate the growth of your hair and they feel great too!
  • Adding volume to hair can hide the thinness
  • If you have thin hair around the forehead area, bangs can sometimes mask this problem
